YRCABC: History

The Young Readers’ Choice Awards Society of British Columbia is the organization that administers the Red Cedar Book Awards. Registered as a non-profit in 1996, the Society is run by volunteers .

When it was formed, the Society had one purpose – to administer a reading program for children ending in the presentation of annual awards to authors of the kids’ favourite books.

The Society also had seven basic duties from registering groups in the reading program, creating reading short-lists, creating activities, administering voting, organizing an awards event, raising funds, and promoting the program throughout BC.

Some of those duties have changed over the years, but the principle still remains the same. We want kids, families, and educators to be engaged, excited, and educated in and about  Canadian books written for kids.
