Safe as Houses
written by
Eric Walters
Eric lives in Mississauga with his wife, Anita, and three children, Christina, Nicholas, and Julia. When not writing or touring across the country speaking to school groups, Eric spends time playing or watching soccer and basketball, or playing the saxophone.
It all began in 1993 when Eric was teaching a Grade 5 class. His students were reluctant readers and writers and Eric began to write to encourage them to become more involved in literature. He wrote his first novel, Stand Your Ground for these kids. It is set in the school where Eric was teaching, Vista Heights Public School, and some of the features of the community of Streetsville and many of the names of his students were incorporated into the story.
Since that time Eric has written sixty more novels! And they are still coming.
While remaining one of the best selling children\'s authors in the country, Eric\'s novels are now available in places as far away as New Zealand and Australia and have been translated into eleven foreign languages.
He has presented to over 1,400,000 children across the country. He loves talking to kids and encouraging them to love literature and follow the examples of real heroes like Terry Fox. Maybe he could come to your school some day.
Also. Eric has now started an organization to help orphan children in Kenya.

This babysitting nightmare is based on a real event: the 1954 flash flood in the Toronto area that was caused by deadly Hurricane Hazel. 13-year-old Elizabeth is looking after two children in a house near the Humber River when the river begins to rise. Cut off from family and neighbours, she must decide whether they should stay in the house or try to escape. The river is raging. The water is coming in. The house is groaning. What will they do?
