Elijah of Buxton
written by
Christopher Paul Curtis
Christopher Paul Curtis was born in Flint, Michigan. After high school graduation, he worked on the assembly line of the Fisher Body Plant for 13 years, until he finally took a year off work to write his first novel. Since then, he’s never looked back. Christopher lives with his wife and two children in Windsor, Ontario, Canada.
CHRISTOPHER SAYS:
One of the reasons I write children\'s literature is because I want to bring joy to children through their love of reading.
Elijah of Buxton l came to me in a way that was far different than any other. From the word \'go\' Elijah and I became close friends. When I\'d go to the library to write, it was as if he were anxiously waiting for me, waiting to tell about his life, his worries, his adventures.
The positive response I\'ve had to Elijah of Buxton from Canadian readers has been extremely gratifying.
Other Books by Christopher Paul Curtis:
The Watsons Go to Birmingham
Bud, Not Buddy

In the mid 1800s town of Buxton Ontario, 11-year-old Elijah helps slaves fleeing America’s plantations build a new life in Canada via the Underground Railroad. Elijah was the first child born free in Buxton and a local celebrity even though he is “fra-gile” according to his overprotective parents and his best friend Cooter.
The town is home to Reverend Deacon Dr. Zepheriah Connerly the 3rd, otherwise known as Preacher, who hatches a plan to use Mr. Leroy’s hard-won savings to go south to purchase his family’s freedom. When the party and the money disappears, Eli searches for the culprits on horseback only to discover a family of slaves in shackles. Eli is their baby’s only chance for a free future – will he live up to his reputation and make it north across the border?
