Ann eventually became a teacher librarian with the York Region District School Board in the Toronto area. She and her husband live on the edge of a hardwood forest. Besides her writing, Ann is a botanical water color artist, a besotted grandmother and an avid naturalist.
Jane Drake
Check out the Resources page for an interview.
When Jane was at university she worked as a research assistant for a history professor, honing her library skills while ferreting out obscure information and storing it on a database – great groundwork for a future non-fiction writer.
Jane gave up a promising career in theater to write full time. Among many roles, she has played Mary in Mary Poppins, a hula dancer, Janice Joplin, the Queen of Hearts and Lady Macbeth!
Jane’s outside interests include reading, vegetable gardening, slow cooking, snowshoeing, sudoku, traveling and birding.
She and her Labrador pup, Angus, enjoy sharing long doggie walks in the country with her sister, Ann, and her Golden Retriever pup, Skookum.
About the Illustrator:
Graphic designer and children\'s illustrator Claudia Dávila was born in Chile and now makes her home in Toronto.
She started drawing at five years old, and has never studied at art school.
The thing she likes most about creating children’s books is that she doesn’t have to pretend to be cool or hip so there’s more room to be creative and let her style expand to suit the topic and readership. Also, each book is a brand new project, so there is always an exciting project in the works.
She says:
Most of my illustrations are done on the computer after a pencil sketch that is scanned in. The forms, color, texture and shading are all done in Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop.
If you like drawing, draw a lot. If you like writing stories, write a lot. If you like making things or taking photos, do it as much as you can! Everyone has an artist inside of them.
