In Factory Girl by Barbara Greenwood, Emily Watson has a dream. If she can finish just two more years of school, she’ll be able to get one of the new jobs opening up for women – store clerk, typewriter lady, telephone operator. She’s good at school so it ought to happen – but then disaster strikes. Her father loses his job and Emily, at twelve-years-old, will have to leave school to help support the family. When she does find a job, clipping girl in a garment factory, she is dismayed to discover that the work is mind-numbing, the days are long and the boss is a tyrant. This was the life of many child labourers one hundred years ago, but Emily is spunky and she is determined to find a way out, not only for herself but for the girls who work beside her.
Barbara Greenwood is the author of many award-winning books including A Pioneer Story and The Last Safe House, all of which take place in Canada’s past, a place she likes to visit often. Barbara lives in Toronto, Ontario.
Aspiring writers can make an idea grow into a story by asking themselves WHO (is my main character), WHERE (does this story take place) and WHAT (difficult choices will my character have to make)? Interesting answers, to the last question in particular, will lead to a story readers can’t put down.
Other Books by Barbara Greenwood:
A Pioneer Christmas
Gold Rush Fever
A Pioneer Thanksgiving
